How to Track ChatGPT Brand Rankings

ChatGPT doesn't have a rank tracker. There are no positions, no impressions, no CTR. But you can systematically measure your brand's visibility in ChatGPT responses - and build a tracking system that shows trends over time.

The key insight: queries, not rankings

Rank tracking in Google gives you a position number - you're #3 for "project management software." ChatGPT doesn't work that way. Instead, you track: for a given query, is your brand mentioned? How is it framed? Where in the response? What competitors are mentioned alongside you?

It's a different model entirely. But this query-by-query measurement is functionally equivalent to rank tracking - you build a dataset that shows how your AI visibility changes over time in response to the signals you build.

How to manually check ChatGPT brand visibility

1. Build your query list

Write 20–30 queries your target buyers would ask ChatGPT when researching your category. Include category queries ("best [category] software"), use case queries, and comparison queries. Use a spreadsheet.

2. Submit queries and record responses

Submit each query to ChatGPT (GPT-4o). Copy the full response into your spreadsheet. Note: ChatGPT responses vary - run each query 3 times and average the results for more stable data.

3. Record brand presence per query

For each query, record: Is your brand mentioned? Y/N. What framing language? (exact quotes). What position? (1st, 2nd, 3rd mentioned). What competitors are co-mentioned?

4. Calculate mention rate

Mention rate = (queries where brand mentioned / total queries) × 100. This is your baseline ChatGPT visibility metric.

5. Track weekly

Run the same query set every week. Your mention rate and framing quality over time shows whether your signal-building efforts are working.

The manual tracking problem at agency scale

Manual ChatGPT tracking works for a single brand checking 20 queries. It breaks down completely at agency scale. Frankly, most agencies try it manually once and give up. If you have 15 clients each with 30 tracked queries, that's 450 API calls, response parsing, and framing classification by hand every week.

The alternative is automated tracking software. ArtificialPulse submits your query sets to ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews automatically, parses responses, classifies framing, and generates your report - without any manual work per query.

What to track beyond simple brand mentions

Mention rate trend

Week-over-week change in % of queries mentioning your brand.

Framing quality trend

Is framing improving (more strong positive) or declining?

Position within response

Are you 1st or 3rd mentioned? Position matters for consideration.

Competitor co-mentions

When competitors are mentioned without you - your priority gaps.

ChatGPT vs. Perplexity tracking: what's different

ChatGPT tracking and Perplexity tracking require separate measurement because they respond to different signals on different timelines:

ChatGPT

Training-data based - changes over weeks/months as model updates incorporate new data

Fastest lever: Analyst recognition, review volume on major platforms

Perplexity

Real-time retrieval - changes can appear within days of PR coverage or new content

Fastest lever: Editorial coverage, blog content, review platform pages

Automate your ChatGPT brand tracking

ArtificialPulse runs weekly automated tracking across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews - no manual query running required.
