How to Improve AI Visibility: A Practical Guide
You've checked your brand's AI Visibility Score and it's lower than it should be. Here's what actually moves the number - organized by effort and expected impact.
What determines AI visibility
AI models - ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews - decide which brands to mention based on a combination of factors that partially overlap with traditional SEO but aren't identical to it.
The key insight: AI models are trying to give helpful, accurate answers. They mention brands that their training data (or live web crawls, in the case of Perplexity) have identified as authoritative and relevant for specific topics. The more clearly and consistently your brand is associated with a topic across the web, the more likely you are to appear.
That means improving AI visibility is fundamentally about increasing the weight of brand-topic association in publicly available web content. No shortcut exists.
Tier 1: High impact, achievable in 30 days
1. Write content that directly answers target queries
AI models favor content that explicitly answers questions. If someone asks "best project management software for construction companies" and your brand has a page titled "Project Management for Construction Companies: Complete Guide", that's a direct signal.
For each keyword you're tracking, create a page that:
- ✓Has the query (or a close variant) in the H1 and title tag
- ✓Answers the question comprehensively in the first 200 words
- ✓Names your brand and product explicitly in the context of the answer
- ✓Is structured clearly with headers, not buried in paragraphs
2. Claim and fully complete your listings on AI-indexed directories
This is the part most people skip. Review sites and directories are heavily cited by AI models because they're seen as neutral third-party sources. Being present, complete, and well-reviewed on these platforms directly increases the chance you'll be mentioned.
Priority platforms by category:
- B2B/SaaSG2, Capterra, Trustpilot, GetApp
- Local servicesGoogle Business Profile, Yelp, industry-specific directories
- Professional servicesLinkedIn (company page), Clutch, legal/financial directories
- E-commerce/consumerAmazon reviews, Google Shopping, Trustpilot
3. Update your homepage to be unambiguously clear
AI models read your homepage. If it takes three paragraphs to understand what you do and who you serve, that ambiguity reduces how likely the model is to associate your brand with specific queries.
The homepage should state in plain language: what the brand does, who it's for, and the specific outcome it provides. If your homepage is mostly vague brand language and visuals, rewrite the first 200 words as a direct, clear description.
Tier 2: Medium effort, 30–90 days
4. Get mentioned in industry publications
Third-party editorial mentions are strong signals for AI models because they indicate that other authoritative sources consider the brand relevant. This is the AI visibility equivalent of link building.
Target: industry newsletters, trade publications, relevant blogs, podcast show notes, and aggregator sites in your category. Even a brief mention in a credible publication is valuable. Use HARO (Help a Reporter Out) or Connectively for reactive PR opportunities.
5. Build topical authority with a content cluster
AI models recognize topical depth. A brand with 20 pieces of content covering a topic from multiple angles is seen as more authoritative on that topic than a brand with one landing page.
For each core keyword category you're tracking, build a cluster: a pillar page that covers the topic broadly, plus 5–10 supporting pages that address specific sub-questions. Link them together. This structure signals topical depth to AI models just as it does to traditional search engines.
6. Increase the quantity and recency of reviews
Customer reviews are third-party brand mentions with recent timestamps - both are factors that matter for AI visibility. Implement a systematic review-request sequence for new customers, and respond to existing reviews to signal active engagement.
For Perplexity specifically, which crawls the live web: recent reviews on high-authority platforms are particularly impactful because they give the model fresh, crawlable evidence of the brand's relevance.
Tier 3: Long-term investment, 90+ days
7. Build domain authority through consistent backlink acquisition
High-DA domains are cited by AI models more often. The underlying cause is that high-DA sites have earned trust signals that AI training data treats as indicators of authority. Traditional SEO link building - earning links from relevant, authoritative sites - also improves AI visibility indirectly.
8. Create original research or data that gets cited
Original research - surveys, data analysis, industry reports - gets cited heavily by AI models because it provides the kind of factual, citable content that directly answers "according to research" style queries. A single well-researched piece that gets picked up by industry publications can drive significant AI visibility improvement.
How to measure progress
These strategies take time to show up in AI responses. Track your AI Visibility Score weekly, with the expectation that content and PR work shows impact over 4–8 weeks.
Look for movement at the keyword level first - not all keywords will improve at the same rate. A keyword where you publish targeted content will typically respond faster than a broad category keyword.
